As the last leaves fall and the chill of winter sets in, you’ll want to make sure that you’re keeping an eye out for plumbing and HVAC issues that can occur during the colder seasons. If these issues occur, it’s highly recommended that you seek out a professional plumber or HVAC technician to resolve the issues.
At Tindall & Ranson, we’re here to help you stay ahead of any problems. Here’s a list of seven plumbing and HVAC issues to keep an eye on this winter. Should you see any of the issues listed below, let us know!
If you have an old air filter that you’ve yet to change, it will be dirty and blocked, which not only prevents the air quality of your home, but also the air flow. It’s recommended that each season, you swap out your air filters to ensure that the air flows freely and cleanly in your home.
Frozen pipes are never a fun experience. They may go unnoticed all winter long, but once the weather warms, they could burst. The key is to prevent cold air from freezing the pipes, so you’ll want to keep the heat set an appropriate level. You may also want to shut off water to any exterior pipes that you won’t be using until spring.
Duct leaks can have a negative effect on your attempts at warming your home. This loss of warm air not only prevents your home from warming up, but it could also be costing you in gas or energy bills. Before winter rolls in, you’ll want to inspect your ducts for leaks to ensure that you’re not losing out on any warm air.
There are several signs that can tell you your water heater is starting to go. You’ll want to look for pooling water underneath the heater, discolored water coming from your faucets, wrong temperature or slow to warm up, and even unusual sounds coming from the water heater. If you notice these signs, contact a technician immediately to prevent further issues.
In the winter, you rely heavily on your thermostat. Without being able to accurately control it, the temperature in your home could spike or plummet. Before utilizing the thermostat for the winter, you’ll want to check and see if it’s properly calibrated so you can control the temperature of your home.
In the winter, clogs can be more common because any materials that make it into your drain could bunch up, and eventually freeze. This can lead to water coming back up, or sinks that won’t drain. Contact a plumber to investigate the issue and remove the clog.
In order to keep the water warm in your home, you’ll want to make sure that there are no issues with the pilot light. The pilot light should be a blue flame. Any other color could indicate a dirty tube or insufficient airflow. Contact a technician to inspect the system if you see a different colored flame.
If you notice any of the signs listed above, you won’t want to ignore them because they could lead to bigger issues. Tindall & Ranson is your local plumbing and HVAC contractor that can help spot these issues and provide the necessary service and maintenance to help you keep your home comfortable this winter.
