How to Transition Your HVAC System from Winter to Summer

After a winter filled with snow and ongoing restrictions due to the pandemic, we feel safe in saying that just about everyone can’t wait for spring! Before you start planning barbecues, vacations, and trips to the beach, give your HVAC system a few minutes of your attention to make sure it’s ready to get you through the summer months.

Clear Debris from the Outdoor Air Conditioning Unit

Remove any leaves, branches, trash, or other debris that may have settled on or around the unit over the course of the winter. If you see anything inside the unit that is not easily removable, let Tindall & Ranson take care of it to prevent injury and damage.

Give the Air Conditioning a Dry Run

Take your air conditioning unit out of hibernation and let her go for a walk around the block. In other words, let your air conditioning run for a complete cycle.

Do you hear any unusual noises, like rattling or banging? Does the operation of the unit seem to slow down or stop at any point? Do you notice any odors? Can you feel the air getting cooler in every room of your home?

Make a note of what you observe and share that information with Tindall & Ranson when you schedule your spring maintenance appointment.

Replace Your Filter

You should be replacing your filter every one or two months depending on the type and quality of the filter, but the change of season is a good reminder to make the switch if you forgot. Also, consider upgrading your filter to one that will catch more particles and allergens. When you pick up filters for a few dollars at a big box store, you get what you pay for.

Adjust Your Humidifier

If you have a humidifier, it works hardest during winter months when the air is cold and dry. As weather gets warmer, you won’t need the humidifier to run much, if at all. Replace the filter and either adjust the settings or turn the humidifier off. If you’re not sure how to do this, ask your Tindall & Ranson technician.

Clean the Vents

Everyone has spent more time than usual indoors this winter. Check supply and return vents for small toys, pet hair, food, and other visible debris and run a vacuum over the vents to pick up any remaining dust. Tindall & Ranson can expect your duct work to determine if you need to have your ducts cleaned.
