How to Get Ahead of Winter with Your HVAC System
Keeping your home warm and cozy doesn’t have to be a struggle during the brisk winter months. While the frigid season has yet to approach, you have time to prepare your HVAC system to ensure that it’s helping your family stay comfortable this winter.
At Tindall & Ranson, we have a few helpful tips that you can use to prepare your home HVAC system for the winter to come!
Make Sure Vents Aren’t Blocked
The vents in your home are a vital part of your HVAC system’s effectiveness. They’re responsible for pushing air through to the rooms in your house. However, having furniture like bookshelves, couches, or even dressers in front of the vents can greatly diminish airflow and potentially cause your furnace to shut off.
It’s best to ensure that there are no obstructions in front of your vents so the warm air can flow freely throughout the different rooms in your home.
Check or Change Your Filter
Having a fresh air filter in your HVAC unit can make all the difference in not only the flow of air, but also the quality of it. A dirty air filter affects air flow into your home, as well as causing your system to work harder, which results in higher costs. Change out the filter if necessary, to ensure proper air flow and lower energy bills.
Identify & Cover Drafts
There’s nothing more disheartening in a warm home than a cold draft caused by a frigid gust of wind outside. If you feel a chill, it means you have a draft. Check your windows and doors to determine if there is a draft.
If you find a draft, you can:
- Apply temporary caulk
- Weatherproof exterior doors
- Add weatherstripping or sealing tape to your windows
Check the Age of Your Heating System
The age of your heating system can affect your energy bill and its ability to provide adequate heat to your home. Generally, heating systems, when properly maintained, can last up to 15 years or more.
If your heating system is reaching 15-years-old, it’s best to have it inspected to determine if more maintenance is required, or if you need to prepare to have it replaced. HVAC winter maintenance is vital towards keeping your home cozy this season.
Get an Inspection of Your HVAC System
If it’s been a while, or you simply want to prepare the switch from cool to warm, having your system inspected can help you address any problems with it. Whether the filters need to be replaced, connections need to be tightened, or coils need to be swapped out, it’s best to have a professional take a close look.
By having service and maintenance performed on your HVAC unit, it will be operating at its best, and it will be ready provide the necessary warmth to your home in the winter.
