Fall is the time where the temperatures outside can vary from warm to cool, but almost always comfortable. But as the leaves change colors and the days get shorter, it’s the transitional period of the year where you get ready to turn on the heat to keep your home comfortable.
However, before you begin the switch, there’s some common plumbing and HVAC issues that could potentially occur that you’ll want to be aware of so you can have them corrected before they develop into more severe problems.
Ensuring that your heating system is functional is important for when the cooler temperatures start to become more common. Here are a few issues to spot and consider:
One of the most common issues, but the easiest to fix, is dirty air filters. Depending on your system, you’ll want to change these out each season. When the filters are filled with dust and pollen, it can restrict airflow and put more strain on your system to work harder.
If you turn on your heater after months of being dormant, there is a possibility that the system either fails to ignite, or stay lit. An HVAC technician can inspect the system to identify the underlying issue.
When your heater is on, but it’s constantly turning off and on, this is called short cycling. It’s most likely due to a blocked airflow or a faulty thermostat.
If you hear grinding, squealing, or banging sounds, it usually indicates loose mechanical parts or even a broken blower motor.
While plumbing is a constant in your home, there’s a slowdown in the fall due to the lack of utilizing outdoor fixtures and hoses, but you can still look to spot any issues forming so you can get the issues rectified before the colder weather arrives. These include:
Fall is common for fallen leaves and occasional rainstorms. The mixture can block or clog outdoor drains, which can raise the risk of pooling and potential water damage.
If you have sediment buildup, or the cooling temperatures are causing your water heater to struggle with heating water (inconsistent heating or lengthy warm-up times) it could indicate an issue.
When you’re cooking a lot, and scraps are making their way into your sink, it can lead to a buildup of grease and debris that can cause problems with your garbage disposal.
If you notice any of the issues listed above with your plumbing or HVAC system, it’s important to get the systems inspected to prevent the issues from worsening.
However, you can avoid these issues entirely while the temperatures are still agreeable by scheduling maintenance. Preventative maintenance allows experienced technicians to ensure the health of your system and detect any issues that could lead to further complications down the road.
