Repair vs Replace: Is it Time for a New HVAC System?

Your home’s HVAC system is one of the hardest working appliances in your home. It helps keep your home comfortable all year-round, but it doesn’t last forever. Through routine maintenance and upkeep, you can keep the system running for years, but at some point, it’s going to be time to replace your old system to ensure that your home stays comfortable to combat the severe temperatures.

At Tindall & Ranson, we’re here to help you get a sense of the state of your home’s HVAC system. You’ll be able to see if it needs repair, or if it’s the time that you need to replace it and avoid issues during the coming season.

The Age of Your HVAC System

One of the key indicators of whether or not your system is going to last you through the season is its age. Air conditioners typically last between 10-15 years, as do heat pumps, while furnaces last between 15-20 years. If your air conditioning is more than 10 years old, and it needs a repair that costs more than half of the price of the system, it’s an indicator that it’s time to replace it.

An industry formula that can help you determine if you need to replace the system is take the system’s age and multiply it by the cost of the repairs. If the number exceeds $5,000, it may be time to replace it.

Service Calls are Becoming Common

If you’re dealing with repeated issues over a short span of time that results in service calls and mounting bills, it could be a sign that it’s time to let go of your old system and replace it with a new one. Replacing the system may seem like a major expense at first, but keeping the old system and having it repaired regularly could lead to higher costs in the long run.

Energy Bills are Getting Higher & Higher

Another indicator that your system needs to be replaced is the mounting energy costs. If the bills continue rising each mother, it means that there are inefficiencies with your system, which cause it to work harder at meeting specific temperature requirements. After the system is inspected and repaired, but the bills are still climbing, it may be time to get a new system.

Uneven Temperatures in Your Home

A sign that something is amiss with your HVAC system is its inability to maintain a consistent temperature in your home. If you notice hot and cold spots, weak airflow, excess humidity, or inconsistent thermostat readings, it may mean that your system is unable to effectively provide comfort to all rooms in the house.

Have Your System Inspected

If you’re unsure of whether you’ve got more time with your system or you need it replaced, have it inspected by an HVAC technician who can determine the various repairs it needs so you can calculate whether it’s worth repairing, or if it makes more fiscal sense to replace the system altogether.
